MONGOL INVASIONS
-------------------------- DEC 1987 by Le6 Tro5ng Hie61u, VN Consulting Inc.,
62-65 Saunders St., Suite 1B, Rego Park, NY 11374.
The Mongol empire covered most of Asia, extending from the Yellow Sea in
eastern Asia to the borders of eastern Europe. It began under Genghis Khan
and reached its furthest under Kublai Khan during the thirteen century.
In 1257, the Mongol armies of Kublai Khan reached the capital at Ha2 No65i
only to find that the Vietnamese had evacuated the city beforehand. Disease,
shortage of supplies, and the Vietnamese strategy of harassment tactics
foiled this invasion.
In 1284, Kublai Khan sent 500,000 men under his son, Prince Toghani, and a
vast fleet under General Sogetu to attack D9a5i Vie65t. Following Tra62n
Hu7ng D9a5o's strategy, the Vietnamese turned to guerrilla warfare and a
scorched-earth method. Prince Toghani was subsequently defeated by King
Tra62n Nha6n To6ng and General Sogetu was killed.
In 1287, Prince Toghani returned with 300,000 men and a vast fleet. Under
the leadership of General Tra62n Hu7ng D9a5o, the Vietnamese drove iron-tipped
spikes into the bed of the Ba5ch D9a82ng River, their points concealed below
the water's surface. They then lured the Mongol fleet into the river just as
the tide was starting to ebb. Impaled by iron-tipped spikes, the entire
Mongol fleet was sunk, captured, or burned. The Mongol army suffered heavy
casualties and finally withdrew.
